"The Green Fields of France" was written in 1976 singer-songwriter Eric Bogle.  The song is performed by punk rock band The Dropkick Murphys.  Click on the link to go to a video of the song.  Listen to the song, and watch the video.

Write a response to the song addressing the following issues:

1. Summarize the setting and action for the song.  Make sure to place it in time.   What are "The Last Post" and "Flowers of the Forest"?  Why does the songwriter mention them?
2.  Compare this song to another popular song about the same type of subject.
3. What purposes does music serve in the history of a people?  Does it surprise you that a punk band would choose to record this song?  Why or why not?
4.  Were you familiar with this song before this exercise?  Did you like it?   Why or why not?
5.  Look at the following link for two additions to this song added later.  One is the response from Willie McBride from beyond the grave, the other one connects the song to the war in Afghanistan.  What do you think each of these songwriters is trying to say?  Additional Lyrics Page
