How not to sound ignorant:  howjsay.com

Garrison Keillor once said he always resented a teacher from his small hometown because she taught students to say "Mo-jave Desert,"  which proved humiliating in later life.  Don't ever want that to happen to us!  When I speak with students and introduce little-used topics, I want to make sure that I model good pronunciation.

Howjsay.com is primarily an English pronunciation guide, but many foreign phrases are included.  With the internet, there's no excuse to sound uneducated.  Let's all give it our best shot, and when we're not sure, use a tool to find out how to pronounce those obscure words!

Action Item:  Add this link to your toolbar so you can learn to pronounce unfamiliar words as you encounter them in research and homework.

With howjsay.com, you key in a word and click on it to hear the pronunciation.  Definitions are available also.

  1. I love how you posted howjsay.com on your page. Sometimes I have to Google certain words and hear the pronunciation so I don't sound ignorant! LOL I do not want to do that. That is why sometimes I get nervous talking in front of a crowd afraid I will mess up on a word! Your blog is beautifully put together!
